Guadua is an impressive bamboo with stunning canes that has it regarded as one of the most incredible looking species available. This bamboo however is one for the serious collector as it does not like dry conditions nor does it like frost. Additionally, once the plant matures, the lower third of the canes are branchless. Guadua produces excellent timber ideal for making furniture. This bamboo definitely has the ‘wow’ factor! Prefers a sunny/warm or partly shaded position.

Giagantochloa atroviolacea

Java is a highly attractive ornamental bamboo and one of the most popular of all the blacks. The young canes start off dark green and turn rapidly dark brown-black or deep purple-black. The canes are used extensively for furniture making and building material and the shoots are edible. Commonly mistaken for the Timor Black species, which it closely resembles, the canes of the Java have more of a matt finish. This bamboo will do best in a sheltered position. Direct exposure to the afternoon sun on the black canes will cause some ‘sun-bleaching’ to occur. For this reason it is best protected from direct afternoon sun exposure.Prefers a sunny or partly shaded position.

Dendrocalamus minor var. ‘Amoenus’

This is a very beautiful clumping bamboo that is commonly used as an ornamental bamboo. It is very popular and regarded as one of the world’s most stunning looking bamboos. Ghost Bamboo will grow to a maximum height of 8m with a very tight clumping habit and large dense foliage making it a very popular choice and an attractive species for the smaller garden space. The culms of this species are yellow-green in appearance with green stripes running the length of the cane. Ghost Bamboo is also very tolerant of frost and drought making this bamboo very easy to grow here in Perth. Prefers a sunny or partly shaded position.
